CUADERNO DE VIAJE 1 DÍA EN MALAGA {T. NOTEBOOK MALAGA}

  1. We left our holiday destination to spend a day in Malaga as tourists. God, more than 20 years coming to the south every summer and I haven´t visited the city yet. There´s one thing clear for me, Málaga can´t be seen in just one day, impossible!, so we will leave other interesting city spots for the next time. When we arrived, we had a coffee in a coffee shop which name was Coffee with books (Café con libros).

  1. For this tour, we hired a GUIDE just for the morning. Carlos arrives on time to our meeting point in the Plaza de la Merced. This is one of the best squares to visit in Malaga. Located in the centre, lookout for an obelisk in memory of General Torrijos. The house where Picasso was born is also located in this plaza which is now the headquarters for Picasso foundation. Besides, there are many coffee shops like the one I´ve shown in the picture above.
  2. The neo-classical obelisk which was placed here by the Town Hall in 1842 replacing a fountain, commemorates the 49 victims who were sacrificed on Dec 1831 to defend freedom in Spain during the reign of Ferdinand VII. The bodies were loaded into garbage trucks and taken to the cemetery of San Miguel. You can read the names of all of them on the four sides of the obelisk. With them, an Irish name, Mr. Robert Boyd. Mr. Boyd was buried in the English Cemetery in Malaga since he was Anglican More information in here

  1. ALCAZABA OF MALAGA
  2. This impressive group of buildings, mostly dating from the eleventh century, formed the palace-fortress of the Moslem rulers of the city. It is built on a spur and adapted to its contours. This Fortress palace, whose name in Arabic means citadel, is one of the city´s historical monuments and is much visited because of its history and beauty.
  3. We went up using a lift for that purpose, we didn´t want to waste time going up, there were many things we wanted to visit in the morning. So the lift takes you directly to the Palace. It is inside this precinct built in the eleventh and thirteeth and fourteenth centuries. All this area has now been restored, and there is an exhibition about Moslem ceramics and pottery.
  1. Inside this holes in the walls, they used to leave jars of cold water. The walls helped to keep the temperature of the water. Remains of the Roman walls lined with red stucco appeared and small cisterns carved into the slate and used for making garum (the fish paste made by the Romans) were found during the first archaeological dig. There is also a dungeon where Christian slave girls were locked after working during the day.
  1. In its day it was surrounded by a neighbourhood that no longer exists, with latrines in every house and its own sewerage system, proof of the high level of civilisation achieved at the time. There´s no neighbourhood around now, but the view from up here is awesome.
  2. The building´s military components make it one of the most important Muslim work in Spain today. Despite its machilations, turrets, arrow slits and battlements, perhaps its more effective defence was its location, overlooking the city and bay.
  1. Malaga´s Town Hall is one of the four administration buildings with politic responsability in the city, together with the Spanish general Administration, La Junta de Andalucía and the Council of Malaga.Opened to the public in 1919, the City council building is the work of architects Guerrero Strachan and Rivera Vera. It was built on reclaimed land after the constructions of the Parque de Málaga (Malaga´s Park).
  1. MÁLAGA´S CATHEDRAL
  2. It´s full name is Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación (Our Lady of Incarnation) although in Málaga it is simply known as "The Cathedral". Cathedrals are important in all cities, but here in Málaga it is even more important than usual. It is not only a religious building but a landark, a national landmark, a milestone along the road and a witness to many events.

  1. The building is one of the best examples of Spanish religious art and it is located on the remains of other cultural buildings such as the early Almohad mosque. With three naves with ambulatories, it is in some ways an evolution of Gothic art. This style initially welcomed the new Renaissance.

  3. There are also two magnificent organs with more than 4.000 pipes, rare and beautiful eamples of 18th century musical instruments. Today they are still being put to good use and are frequently played in concerts.
  1. The missing tower has led to it being popularly known as "La Manquita" (one-armed) and a legend that is still told today says that the money allocated for its completion in the 19th century was sent to pay for the wars in America, although there is evidence that the money actually went to fund emergency public works in the province....well you never know!.
  1. We left the Cathedral, to wander around is also very important. The weather that day was gorgeous. We couldn´t be in a better place.
  1. The Café de Chinitas, in Pasaje de Chinitas, was a small theatre or coffee shop where they played music that established in 1857 and lasted until 1937. It was a small place, with a small stage and six boxes, in some occasions was a whorehouse and was closed because of all the scandals. Its flamenco shows were quite popular. It has become very famous thanks to the popular verses compiled by Federico García Lorca.
  1. And we went to visit the Atarazana market going through Plaza de la Constitución.
  2. This was the ancient Plaza mayor and is located in the heart of the historic centre of the city, which since the 15th century has been the public and political space. It has changed its name several times through history. The buildings surrounding the square include the former College of the Jesuits and the home of the Consulate. In 2003 the square and the famous calle Larios became pedestrian and the Genova fountain was relocated there.
  1. The Atarazanas market is in the place where the Nasrid shipyards stood until the 14th Century and which after the Christian conquests of the city, were used for storage and as an arsenal, military hospital and barracks. Thanks to the intercession of the Academia de Bellas Artes de San Telmo (San Telmo´s Academy of Fine Arts), the ancient monuental door of the old shipyards was saved and transfered to the centre of the main façade of the new building. Rucoba designed in neo-Arab style, although using a great deal of glass and iron. This ensured that, although almost all of the old Muslim construction dissapeard, Málaga was given a suitable and necessary market building and one of the city´s best examples of the 19th century architecture. The market opened its doors to the public in 1879.
  1. In the market I captured one of the most funniest scenes in the morning, not even I. nor our guide realised, and obviously the boy´s mom didn´t. He first looked to the left and then to the right, and finally he took an almond when nobody was looking. I knew what he was going to do, Iwaited......and well I can tell I´ve had some experience in the matter.
  1. After lunch, we decided to visit the Picasso Museum.
  2. It´s not allowed to take pictures inside the museum, you can take pictures just to the Palacio de los Condes de Buenavista. The pictures of the Palace are mine, but the ones of Picasso´s pictures were taken somewhere. These are three samples of the Picasso´s pictures in Malaga´s museum collection.
  3. The Palacio de los Condes de buenavista, a Renaissance building that is home to the useo Picasso Málaga, was declared a National Monment in 1939. Built in the first half of the 16th century. It is located in the historic center of Málaga, in the Calle San Agustín.
  1. During the 20th century a royal decrete established the Museum de Bellas Artes, which was closed in 1997 to make way for the Picasso museum which was opened in 2003. The Picasso collection inside is awesome.
  2. Picasso´s relationship with his native city was distant but nostalgic. Pablo Ruiz Picasso was orn in Málaga´s centrally located Plaza de la Merced on 25 October 1881. Ten years later he left with his family for La Coruña. For three years he returned to Málaga during the summer, his last visit to the city dates from Christmas 1900 in the company of his frind, the painter Carlos Casagemas.
  3. Having spent three weeks enjoying café-concerts in the city and visiting relatives, Picasso left Málaga in January 1901, never to return. He was nineteen and at that point embarked on a career that was marked by success in Barcelona and subsequently in France.
  1. The three pictures I´ve added above are in order: The first, "Olga Khokhlova in a Mantilla". In February 1917, Picasso went to Rome where he met the Russian ballerina Olga K. Picasso introduced her to his family as his fiancée and painted this oil, the first known depiction of the young Olga wearing a Mantilla to mark their engagement. The second picture is "Mother and child" Picasso adapted his models to the canons of Antiquity and classicism, while imbuing the theme of motherhood. Here his wife Olga and his newborn son who was born in Paris on the 4th Feb 1921. The picture was painted between 1921 and 1923. The third one, "Woman with raised arms". Picasso met the photographer Dora Maar in the early summer of 2936 and she soon became his constant companion. They used to spend the summers together in Mougins but the war in 1936 affected him a lot. The picture painted that year, celebrates a new love in his life but with her raised arms as an anxiety sign which was reflected in his emotive portraits.

  1. And what do you think we did after this visit?, sit down for a while in a teahouse in the same street and join a gorgeous morish tea. We have to go back to this wonderful city.
  1. It´s late, and we have in our minds many things to visit. The Thyssen museum, the English cemetery, to enjoy of some historic parks and gardens, the Centre Pompidou, some religious museum, well anyway, I think we have material for several Summers because I want to wander through its streets too. And we went back to the parking, tired but happy, admiring the gorgeous Acacias from Constantinopla (known also as the silk tree) and the Jacarandas with its violet colour.
  2. And if you go to Málaga, don´t forget to buy almonds, I´ve bought some grams to make Ajoblanco, but this will be another´s post subject.
