CUADERNO DE VIAJE, LA TOJA GALICIA {TRAVEL NOTEBOOK, LA TOJA,GALICIA}

  1. I hadn´t realised how long this travel notebook from Galicia was. This is my 5th post and I haven´t finished yet. You might think I have something similar to Bilbo Baggins complex probably,...going from here to there, visiting every single village around, but it doesn´t matter how much time we spent on those excursions, time as usual flies and in the end, what I have is my logbook (well the truth is that it´s just an old notebook)...that helps me to keep all my memorable experiences alive.

  1. After breakfast (in my case a huge one because like Jekyll and Hyde, I turn myself into a morning vacum cleaner, I can eat anything), we left towards O´Grove. We took one of those tourist boats. We went to see what "bateas" (floating rafts where they breed musles, oysters and clams) are. The truth is that it was freezing in the boat, I forgot that temperature drops there, but I always take a shawl with me to "hide" whatever ou need to hide, and it´s quite useful on these occasions.
  1. Bateas, are huge floating rafts made of wood, from which ropes hang. The platform is anchored by one or two chains. The baby mussles, oysters or clams, are attached to the ropes using a thin rayon thread where they grow until they can be collected. There are some algae which also grow there, used basically for pharmacy purposes and in certain recipes, so in the end, the "batea" is an ecosystem itself.
  1. The truth is that I´ve always thought that everything related to fishing is hard when you do it to earn a living of course. Don´t think I´ve put a foot on one of these to shoot my camera, I only had half body outside the boat so I could take a proper picture.
  1. It´s another story to go there, pull those ropes, recolect the mussles.....I was thinking my belly would be flat as a table.
  1. Well...thinking about my belly again, maybe it wouldn´t be flat either.
  1. On board, we had a mussle and wine tasting that was gorgeous. I was very surprised to see that I was able to eat mussles after my huge breakfast...it wasn´t even 11.00 a.m. yet. Mussles were superb.
  1. When we arrived to the port, we went to visit the farmer´s market. It was like being at home. Veggies, seafood and "orujo" a typical drink from Galicia, I must say we´re quite similar if you visit one market in here. More info in here.
  1. Finally we took the car and drove towards La Lanzada beach to go to Sanxenxo. I can´t believe we´re being so lucky with the weather.
  1. In Sanxenxo, we sat in a terrace. This time there were many people at the beach, it was Saturday and it was hot.
  1. We went back in the car, this time heading for Pontevedra.
  1. Pontevedra is situated in the rias baixas (on lower bays) of Galicia, and it is the region´s most southern sea facing province. When you reach Pontevedra, parking up is not a problem and the easiest solution is to follow signs for the town center and then park iin the undergound car park directly beneath the "alameda" (town square). This car park is fairly cheap, at least comparing it to ours in San Sebastián, it´s secure and more importantly easy to find when you are ready to leave. From a tourist perspective, Pontevedra is becoming increasingly popular. The city is historically famous, culturally rich and has a significant number architectural attractions worth seeing. It has a very well preserved medieval town centre along with many small and popular squares,(I was surprised to see how cleaned it was), most of which have cafe´s and bars around them. Much of this area is also pedestrianised, making travel on foot the most convenient option.
  1. Church of La Peregrina. It has the shape of a scallop shell and it lies along the famous pilgrim´s route to Santiago de Compostela
Plaza de la Herreria (Plaza da Ferreria)
Centro histórico de la ciudad
  1. Historic centre
  1. And once more, we sat here to have lunch, well it was going to be light because we weren´t hungry really. This place is called "Meigas fora", which means "Witches out", well maybe my daughter and I shouldn´t be sitting here.... Picture from Zsa Zsa
  1. We just had a couple of bites for lunch, some croquetes that were gorgeous and some cheese from the zone that it was worth trying. And then we left, feeling still the taste of the cheese in our mouths back to the hotel too take a nap.
  1. We enjoyed some thermal baths back in the hotel and those relaxed moments together, and to swallow food we decided to walk to the centre of O´Grove from La Toja. It was about 40 minutes walk, but it was awesome.
¡Qué bien se come aquí!.
  1. And with this beautiful walk towards O´Grove, we finished our day. Dinner was gorgeous. The food here is excellent!
  1. You have to cross the bride to arrive to O´Grove
  1. That tangy smell of the sea, so evocative of long walks by the seaside is something I love. I miss it when I don´t breath it.
  1. Another gorgeous day I must say. The following morning, which is our 8th day in Galicia. We´re really enjoying the experience. Today is 24th August and it´s Sunday so I suppose we took another route. We left the hotel early and went to Ribeira without stopping. Ribeira is located in the northern part of the ria the Arousa, and it´s also one of the leading cities of Rias Baixas and Galicia. In Ribeira we found a pirate Sunday market and in Palmeira we stopped to admire the tempting beaches. Where did I put my swimming suit?.
Las playas de Palmeira muy tranquilas.
  1. Beaches in Palmeira are quiet and relaxing.
  1. This is the richest estuary in the world, with a wide variety of seafood.
  1. From Palmeira we left towards Pobra de Caramiñal y from there to Rianxo, because we didn´t stop at Boiro.
  1. We are in Rianxo, we had lunch in here, the place was a bit weird but the food was excellent. We´re in the empanada (pie typical from here). Here is where we stay and relaxed for a while.
Todo está tan tranquilo.
  1. Everything is so quiet.
Seguimos nuestra ruta hacia Catoira y Carril.
  1. We went on our route towards Catoira and Carril. Carril is a very famous village because of its clams. Tamarinds are full of flowers. They are awesome.
  1. While we were on the road, we saw many Albariño wineries on both sides. They are organised in a way they form a tunnel. If I had one, I´d sit under them and have a light snack enjoying the shadow. Albariño - more information
  1. Clams are one of Galicia´s most famous gastronomic products and it is said that there are no better clams than the ones from Carril, so it seems fitting that this Galician town, should honor them with a festival held over a weekend in August. Are we still thinking of food?. I´ll remember the brief stops at Villagarcía de Arousa, Vilanova de Arousa and in Isla de Arousa.
  1. And the wonderful tea we had at the Parador Nacional in Cambados.
  1. We went back to the hotel driving along the coast, enjoying the landscape and remembering all the places we had visited that day. We had dinner in the Club Náutico in San Vicente do Mar, somebody recommended us the place for the fish and the truth is the it was gorgeous. Before dinner, we took the pictures below...wow, what a night!..it was awesome.
