CRETA / CRETE
8/9/10/11/12/13/14/15 AGOSTO 2013 - 8th/9th/11th/12th/13th/14th/15th AUGUST 2013

Día 1/ Day 1

Once we arrived to the port, driving along that endless road, we took the ferry boat from Santorini to Crete.

We were able to put our feet on Crete an hour and a half later. When I first saw the land from the ferry I wanted to shout "land ho", like the pirates, but I chose to keep quiet instead. We´re are in Heraklio.

We rented a car to drive around the island. We had to drive 80 km more to go to Rethymno. We had some trouble setting the gps. The way they drive, god!, fast, without center lines on the road. We put Misiria and we got lost!, it kept us sending us to the same place, a corn field. As I mentioned before, people are really kind in here and through the mobile, they helped us to arrive to the hotel safely!. It´s very late.

Día 2 / Day 2

When I got up, I realised that I had a room with a view too. Yesterday it was so dark and quiet that I didn´t notice. First day in Crete, well we decided to take it easy and go with the flow at least until the evening. At 10.00 a.m. we´re already enjoying the beach after a nice sleep and relaxing from the week before and the walking tours.

Around 7.00 p.m. we drove to Rethymno, which is 4 km away from our hotel. It´s nice to have a walk and dinner after a day at the beach.

Rethymno region as a whole is rich in ancient history. It began a period of growth when the Venetian conquerors of the island decided to put an intermediate commercial station between Heraklio and Chania, acquiring its own bishop and nobility in the process. The old town is beautiful and almost entirely built by Venetians. It´s one of the best preserved old towns in Crete.

Las vistas hacia el horizonte, siempre espectaculares.

The view towards the horizon are always awesome.

Pescado fresco y marisco. Hay mucho donde elegir.

We had dinner on a balcony facing the bay. Fresh fish and seafood is the best option.

Día 2/ Day 2

After a huge breakfast, we took the car and drove towards Cnossos with the clear intention to visit the Palace.

Knossos was the most important city of the minoic civilization that flourished on the island of Crete during the second and third millennia B.C. It was the oldest palace settlement in Europe. The four palaces of Knossos, Faestos, Zakro and Malia were built around 1900 B.C. on this area for commercial purposes assuring direct communications with the most important routes in the Mediterranean and Egean Seas.

The Minoan palaces played an active role in all the activities of Minoan society, adapting to multiple demands with various functions. The palace never closed their doors to the citizens. They may have had special sacred areas (throne rooms) where the king and his officials deliberated on matters of policy or justice, but the palaces also contained the major sanctuaries to which all the people had access.

These palaces could never be compared to those built in late periods. For the first time, Minoic palaces were surrounded by villas and a huge community that was the adminstration and justice centre as well as important commerce and manufacturing settlements where the productive and economic activity was controlled from.

In Greek mythology, the Labyrinth was an elaborate structure designed and built for King Minos of Crete at Knossos. Its function was to hold the Minotaur, a mythical creature that was half man and half bull and was eventually killed by Theseus. Labyrinth is a word of pre-Greek origin, which the Greeks used for the palace of Knossos in Crete. It was a symbol of royal power.

I really didn´t have any idea of what to expect during our journey around Crete or well, in Greece in general. I had heard bits & pieces about the history and culture of this civilization. I am blown away by the history of this country, and besides I don´t know why, but the colour of the sky in this country is spectacular. Maybe it´s just because we´re in the Mediterranean.

By the time we live Knossos to drive to Malia it´s really hot. We stopped in different places to have a drink and take some pictures. It was very quiet and the landscape is awesome.

We had a bite and a couple of drinks, enjoying the view and the sea breeze.

I thought this was going to be really crowded but at this place, we didn´t see any single soul around really.

From Malia, we moved to visit the Zeus cave, located on the slopes of Mount Ida. To ride on this donkey, my I. had to pay 10 Euros (according to the people in charge, there wasn´t any other way to access to the top of the mountain). The donkey was moving so slowly that my I. decided to forget about it and walk. I didn´t feel like visiting a cave and prefered to stay chatting with the waiters while having a drink...and I think it was the best idea because the cave was really slippery and dark and there were people who didn´t want to go inside so I´m not going to recommend this visit.

Día 3 / Day 3

Beach, beach and more beach......I didn´t want to be anywhere else. This is great!.

Something unique takes place at night on this beach. Loggerhead sea turtles come out on the beach to nest. You can see the nests and you have to respect them of course. Mother turtles come out to the shores of Crete. At night, they dig an egg chamber in the sand to deposit around 120 eggs. The eggs have to remain undisturbed. The hatchlings emerge from their nests, usually during the night, and race towards the sea.

At night, we went to a traditional organic farm, the Agreco Farm in Rethymno, where you can experience traditional Cretan life even participate in the farm activities. We had dinner there.

We enjoyed a guided tour around the estate.

Probamos patatas con limón y mantequilla y estaban buenísimas.

We tried potatoes with butter and lemon and they were really yummy.

Olivos centenarios

Ancient olive trees.

We tasted a typical Creta diet.....the truth is that we ate all the typical dishes from Crete. I felt really bloated after that dinner!!.

Una noche fantástica.

A great night!

Día 4 / Day 4

We´re going to visit several places to day, starting with Kourna Lake. Kournas is the name of the village and nearby lake on the island of Crete overlooking the lake. The village is well known for its pottery and taverns.

Después, seguimos a Kissimos.

Following with Kissimos.

Chania.

Chania is the second largest city of Crete. It lies along the north coast of the island, aprox 70 km west from Rethymno.

Despite being heavily bombed during World War II, Chania´s old town is considered the most beautiful urban district of Crete, especially the crumbling Venetian harbour. The central part of the old town is named Kasteli.

We went back to the hotel late in the evening. The sunset is so spectacular in here that I had to take some pictures.

Día 5 / Day 5

We wanted to do this excursion. We took the New National Road (this is the way they call it) towards the west part of the island until Giorgiopolis. Following our gps (which by now has gone crazy), we went through some paths I didn´t like at all.

We took a paralell road towards Imbros Canyon. From there, to Frangokastello, we were going to see the castle and the settlement and of course to have a drink. We´re already in the Lybian sea and from here we can see the African coastline.

We went to Plakias through another terrible road. There were no space for two cars there.

Finally we´re in Plakias. We had something to eat under a tamarind tree. Our lunch was perfect and gorgeous. Besides, the waiter had been working in the Canary Islands and he loved everything Spanish so he really took care of us.

We went back to the hotel through the other side, the road was much better in here.

We ended our afternoon at the beach and later on we went to Rethymno to have dinner to a restaurant named Palazzio di Corinna that I´m going to recommend.

Día 6 / Day 6

We spent the day at the beach and packing. This is over. In every journey, I enjoy the pre the during and the post. I´ve already enjoyed all that.

COSAS QUE NO DEBES HACER EN CRETA / THINGS YOU MUSTN´T DO IN CRETE

1) No llevar tacones.

1) Don´t wear your stilettos in here either.

2) If you don´t want to end up with a leg like mine, you need to take an insect repelent. I think it was a spider the one that bit me, but who knows. I woke up like this the morning after we visited the farm.

3) Drive as if you were born in Crete, 24 hours later we rented the car.

4) Miss a walking tour through Chania old part.
