PRAGA - PRAGUE

Actually this is our first day in Prague and for 80 euros, we´ve hired a guide for the whole morning. He´s going to take us around.
We start with the Municipal house.

The Art Nouveau sturcture is an artifact of the Czech nationalism of the time and carries a wealth of ornament by some of the leading Czech artists of its day. Is a major civic landmark and concert hall in Prague, and an important building in architectural and political history in the Czech Republic. The main space is the concert space which is very popular. There are also several cafés and restaurants on the ground floor and basement.

Seguimos hacia la Torre de la pólvora. (Prasná brána)

We´re now in the Powder Tower.

The Powder Tower is a Gothic tower in Prague and una of the 13 old city gates. It´s one of the symbols of Prague. When construction began, it was connected to the royal palace. It was a very important for the Bohemian kings. The Bohemian monarchs would pass through the Powder Tower on their way to St. Vitus Cathedral for their coronation.

Las calles, la Plaza de la República

The streets.

Praha Hlavní nádrazi is the largest and most important railway station in Prague. It´s connected with the border countries as well as with the subway´s line. It was named Franz Josef Station after Franz Joseph I of Austria. Inside the building and halls you can see the Art Nouveau paintings. The last terminal were built in 1979.

I must say as a compliment for the Czecks, that the city is very clean. There was a lot of snow, but pedestrians could easily walk because paths were clear and snow free. Okay, there was ice because of the very low temperatures.

We go towards the National Museum and down through the St Wenceslas square, which for me looks more like a boulevard. St. Wenceslas Square is one of the main city squares and the centre of the business an cultural communities in the New Town of Prague. Many historical events occurred there, and it is tradicional setting for demostratios, celebratios and other public gatherings. The square is named after Saint Wendceslao. the patron saint of bohemia. It is part of the historic centre of Prague, a World Heritage Site.

The National Museum is at the Wenceslas Square. The National Museum, the oldest museum institution in Bohemia, was established as a “national museum” in 1818.

A different artistic interpretation of the statue, inside a mall that belonged to the previous president of the nation.

Just a few steps away from the centre, next to Wenceslas Square you´ll find the Franciscan Garden, a lovely garden near the Church of Virgin Mary. A set of benches where you can sit and admire the view. It´s a shame there´s snow everywhere, our guide said, because in Spring it´s an oasis of calm, full of flowerbeds, roses, fruit trees and herbs used for medicinal purposes. This is a corner that make you forget that you´re close to the busiest streets of Prague.
It used to belong to the Carmelites but the Franciscans were the ones who got the garden into their custody and rebuilt the garden creating a space that was the monastery pharmacy.

Now we´re in the centre of old Prague. This is awesome!. I already posted some pictures of this part on my first post so I´ll just speak about the Astronomical clock that was constructed in 1410 by a professor of mathematics and astronomy of Prague University. The figures of the 12 apostles, blessing the city at every hour. One of the clocks represents the calendar, the 365 days of the year and the 12 months. The four figures at the clock dial are symbols of the Prague medieval society. On the left side are represented vanity admiring himself in a mirror and the miser into his bag of gold. On the right side are represented Death ringing his bell.

We kept on walking for a while, admiring the wonders of this old city and not to make this post too long, we headed to Charles bridge. The views were spectacular.

And we went to visit the Church of the Infant Gesus of Prague. I had to lit some candles for some friends there.

It´s time for lunch now, and we´re ready to take a break but first stopped to take a couple of pictures to the grafitti´s wall. Everybody stops to see John Lennon´s face on this wall......I have no idea why.

And here we are again, not only warming our souls but our bodies too.....it´s freezing cold!. The place was warm and cosy.

We had some veggies and potato cream soup and sausages. The pretzles were on the table already.

No me quiero extender mas.

I don´t want to make this post longer. I´m leaving a few things out. We kept on walking by, we went towards Mosketa Street, visited a flea market that was closing... Went through Mala Strana and arrived to the hotel around 5 p.m. to rest for a while and get ready for a Mozart dinner. Music comes from every corner of this city.
