CUADERNO DE VIAJE 9, OPORTO-LEON {TRAVEL NOTEBOOK 9, OPORTO-LEON}

Ayer dejamos un par de cosas para ver hoy por la mañana después de desayunar. El mercado do Bolhào y algunas compras que quería hacer. Está jarreando.

Yesterday we left a couple of things to do for today. So after our last breakfast here in Oporto, we went to visit the Bolhào market and to do some shopping I wanted to do. It was pouring rain.

Hemos ido demasiado temprano creo. La mayoría de las tiendas estaban cerradas.

I think we went too early. Most of the shops inside were close.

Y nos vamos de Oporto, dejamos Portugal y ponemos rumbo a León. Tardamos 4 horas en llegar.

And finally we´re leaving Oporto and so Portugal. We´re on our way to León (Spain). It took us 4 hours to get there.

Before leaving this country, I´ll dedicate some biscuits hearts as usual to my Queen of Hearts, (www.mipatatacorazon.com), she makes gastronomic jewellery and collects hearts.

Nos vamos a quedar a dormir en un pueblo a 20 minutos de León que se llama Villapadierna, pero antes nos juntamos con nuestros amigos para comer y conocer la ciudad. Hemos quedado aquí, en el Ayuntamiento de León.

We stayed with some friends in a small village 20km away from the capital which name is Villapadierna, but before that, we met our friends to have lunch and have a walk around the city. We met here, in the Town Hall.

Este edificio llama nuestra atención. Construído por Gaudí en 1891. Es de estilo modernista y con mucha inspiración medieval. Se llama Edificio Botines. No es que me chifle, pero lo pondre por esto de que me recuerda a los zapatos.

This building captured our attention really, because it didn´t match the rest of the buildings. It was built by Gaudí in 1891, modernistic style with sort of medieval inspiration. It´s name, Botines building.

Como es tarde, primero vamos a ir a comer, pero el camino hacia el restaurante me permite seguir sacando fotos y más fotos.

It´s quite late, so we have to go to have lunch. I was very fortunate because in our way to the restaurant, I was allowed to take a lot of pictures.

We had lunch in here.

Teníamos mucha hambre y picamos varias cosas. Solo pondré el primer plato, unas croquetas estupendas.

We were starving and we shared certain things. But I´ll add one picture to this post, just the incredible croquettes we had to start.

Después de comer, un café en la Plaza Mayor. De construcción barroca es de 1665. Antiguamente se celebraban aquí las corridas de toros y mercados. Ha sido restaurada recientemente.

After lunch, a coffee at the Plaza Mayor. Built in 1665 in a baroque style. At the beginning it was used to celebrate the bullfightings and flea markets. It has been restored from scratch recently.

De camino a la catedral, mi amiga me lleva a algunas tiendas típicas. ¡Me encantan las cesteras!, aquí ya no hay ninguna. Tendremos que ir a León otra vez a comprar cestos.

On our way to visit the Cathedral, my friend takes me to some of the most typical shops like this basket manufacturer. In my town,  I can´t find this kind of shops anymore. We can come back here if we need some baskets.

Hasta que nos encontramos con la Catedral. ¿Qué puedo decir de la Catedral?

Until we met the Cathedral. Oh God!, what can I say about the Cathedral?.

El Edificio Gótico por excelencia en España. Empezó a construírse en el siglo XIII y no terminó hasta el siglo XIX, que es cuando realmente se terminó de restaurar.

Probably the finest Gothic building in Spain, León Cathedral mostly dates from the 13th century, but not fully completed until the 19th century, when it was also extensively restored.


Lo que más llama la atención del interior de la catedral, son las 125 ventanas con vidrieras que iluminan el organo. Las vidrieras son espectaculares.

Inside, some 125 medieval stained glass windows illuminate a harmonious. The stained glass windows are spectacular.

El retablo de la catedral, realizado por Nicolás Francés en el siglo 15. El relicario de plata contiene las reliquias de San Froilán, patrón de León.

The altarpiece by Nicolás Francés (15th century) and a silver reliquary containing the relics of San Froilán, patron saint of León.

El efecto de la piedra tan pálida de la catedral combinada con los rayos del sol que se filtran a través de las ventanas, le ha dado a la catedral el nombre de "La casa de la luz".

The effect of the pale stone combined with dazzling rays of sunlight filtering through the windows have given the cathedral the nickname "House of light".

Cualquier detalle la hace especial.

Every single detail makes it very special.

Nos vamos a seguir recorriendo León. Para la catedral necesitaría 3 o 4 posts solamente.

We left to visit other parts of the Historic center. I could dedicate 3 or 4 posts to the cathedral.

Sin darme cuenta, entro en la farmacia más bonita de todo León ¡seguro!, ¡es preciosa!, pido permiso para sacar una foto. It was built in 1827. Para mí, una pieza de arte, ¡impresionante!.

Without noticing it, I go into one of the most (if not the most) beautiful pharmacies in León, for sure!, I asked for permission to take a picture. It was built in 1827. I have to tell that it´s a piece of art!, awesome!.

León la verdad es que está muy cuidado.

León is clean and beautiful.

La Basilica de San Isidoro.

The Basilica of San Isidoro.

Se trata de uno de los conjuntos románicos más importantes y bellos de España. Aparecen asociadas varias artes, que dan idea del pasado esplendoroso del Reino de León en época medieval.

Built mostly in the Romanesque style, the basilica has had major additions in the styles of many succeeding centuries including the Gothic. The arches on the crossing of the transept hark back to Islamic art. You can figure out the splendor of the Reino of León in the medieval period.

Es hora de tomar algo de beber. Estamos cansados después de 4 horas de viaje y de seguir "trotando".

It´s about time we drank something. We are tired after 4 hours in the car and still walking around.


Nos vamos al Parador de San Marcos. Otra pieza de arte en León digna de ver.

We are going to the Parador de San Marcos, oh God!, another piece of art which is worth visiting.

Este es uno de los edificios mas bonitos y más importantes del Renacimiento Español.

This is one of the most beautiful Renaissance building in Spain.

Su fachada es una perla del plateresco, se empezo a costruir hacia el año 1515. En el zócalo se presenta medallones con personajes groco-latinos y de la Historia de España.

The carvings depicting religious andhistorical events on the 100 metre long facade are worthy of note.

Hoy en día, uno de los hoteles más importantes de Europa.

Nowadays is one of the most important hotels in Europe.

Los claustros que rodean el jardín, son impresionantes, se añadieron y se mejoraron entre los siglos 16 y 18.

Magnificent cloisters were added and improved between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries which look over the gardens.

Y con el arco iris que nos acompaña los 20 kilómetros hasta Villapadierna, me despido de León. Mañana dormiremos en casa.

And with the rainbow, which accompained us during the 20km to Villapadierna, I´m closing now. This has been a long post. Tomorrow we will be sleeping at home.
