CUADERNO DE VIAJE 7, SINTRA, NAZARET, OPORTO {TRAVEL NOTEBOOK 7}

20.08.2011

We left the hotel early. We weren´t in a hurry. The weather is not good today, very cloudy and there´s a storm brewing in the ocean, so we don´t feel sorry we´re leaving.

We´re on our way to Sintra!. We didnt´go yesterday, I personally think it´s much better to go in the morning.

Sintra was once holiday residence for the portuguese monarchy and for the morish. Before that period, it was a site of ancient fortifications for romans, arabs, lusos and people from castilla. During no war periods, it was also the favourite place for the monarchs to relax, and the beautiful surroundings used for hunting.  Sintra has its own micro-climate, which is lovely. A sea breeze fans it in summer, but the city remains warm and sheltered in winter. Amazing varieties of exotic plants grow and prosper here, brought to Sintra from all corners of the world.

EL PALACIO DE LA PENA
THE PENA NATIONAL PALACE

The Pena National Palace stands on the top of a hill above the town of Sintra, and on a clear day it can be easily seen from Lisbon. It is a national monument and constitutes one of the major expressions of 19th century Romanticism in the world. The palace is a Unesco World heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal. It was worth the visit!

We´re not allowed to take pictures inside and I wasn´t in the mood to buy a booklet which costs 8 euros.

On our way to Oporto, we stopped to have lunch at Nazaret. The heat is killing us. This villa, has a huge sandy beach and it´s a tupical place for fishermen.

We walked at the beach for a while and we drove to Oporto.

Around 4.00 p.m., we are in the hotel (beautiful btw), in the centre of Oporto. Temperatures are high also. We´re ready to have a walk!. I´m ready to explore this city, people who know this part of the world told us the city is beautiful.

Las tiendas antiguas de alimentación

These old shops to buy groceries

We crossed the Avenida de los Aliados, just in the centre of the city, full of beautiful buildings where we can find the Town Hall.

Even the seagulls come to the city to drink while the statue keeps an eye on them.

Again, ready (we thought we were) to go uphill and downhill, oh God this Portuguese cities!.

We finally arrived to the book shop, Lello is the name. It´s beautiful, I have only one picture because it wasn´t allowed to take pictures, I didn´t know. It´s called the most beautiful bookshop in the world. Well, you know, I´m not very sure about this because it appears in all the booklets so, you never so for sure if it´s a mere tourist attraction or just magic inside.

We have to decide what could we do tomorrow.

Here, the Carmelitas church and Do Carmo church.

Ahora nos vamos hacia abajo y luego hacia arriba otra vez.

Let´s go downhill and then uphill again!, this is so tiring.

We are in the Plaza de la Libertad, the most important plaza in Oporto.

From there and to the left, we can see the San Bento train station, one of the most beautiful and awesome buildings of this city. The hall, decorated with more than 20.000 tiles which represent the history of Portugal. It´s quite impressive really!. Best time to see this in the afternoon, when the sun reflects its rays on the tiles, it´s awesome.

We sat, had a drink and we thought about our plans for the next day. Later on, we went to Ribeira, by the river, one of the most beautiful places to have a walk and to have dinner.

Nos sentamos en esa terraza.

We sat there, under those white umbrellas.

And we went on downhill until we met the river.

While we´re going downhill, we realize that there are many abandom houses due to the change in the rent rates. People prefer to pay a mortage and moved to suburbs.

¡Esto es precioso!

This is awesome!

Sin palabras hasta la hora de cenar.

No words until we find somewhere to eat. This is loaded.

I can´t remember the name of the bar-restaurant where we had dinner. It was all very crowded, even that restaurant someone recommended us, uphill between two tiny streets.

We were lucky. We had dinner in a bar and the food was incredible and really cheap!. We even started with the appetizers.

Tomamos langostinos a la parrilla, buenísimos.

We had grilled shrimps, great!.

And a tray full of grilled baby squids with chips that cost only 9 euros!!. Incredible!. It´s true, you have to be careful with the portions. These trays are for one, what we were doing is sharing.

¡Estamos agotados!.

This time no dessert, and we took a taxi to go back to the hotel and to have a drink near by. We´re exhausted!.

¡Un buen día!

This was another fine day!
